We are back with another Ask an Artist feature and we can’t wait to share this one with you! Misty Leonard has been a part of our Counter Culture DIY family for awhile now and we are excited to help you get to know her better.

Many of you already know Misty Leonard of MD Leonard Designs from our Artist Support page on Facebook. Misty is so generous in sharing her resin skills with us! You can often find her doing live tutorials and answering artist questions. Misty is a fabulous resin artist who specializes in tumblers. Her experience and willingness to share her expertise has helped so many of her fellow artists. If you don’t catch her live on the Artist Support page you can always subscribe to her YouTube channel so you’ll catch all of her resin tutorials. Misty is awesome about answering questions about resin but it was so fun to ask her about herself this time. Read on to learn more about Misty and her advice for her fellow resin artists!

Ask an Artist with Misty Leonard

We asked Misty to tell us a little bit about her family…

I’ve been married for 17.5 years. We have one daughter who is grown and has an adorable little family of her own with two kiddos Kinley (4) and Myles (10 months). I’m an avid weight lifter and love powerlifting! I also love to travel and hike.

And about her work life…

I work full time outside of the home as a surgical assistant and run my business fulltime making custom tumblers and resin art.

Where she would go if she could go anywhere in the world, and why…

Alaska! I have always wanted to travel there for a hunting adventure.

Where she sees herself in 10 years…

Hopefully retired and able to travel more.

One of her strengths and one weakness…

My strength would have to be that I stand strong in my beliefs and values and my weakness would have to be my anxiety.

How she got started with resin…

I decided I wanted to make a sparkly glitter cup for myself and back then there weren’t all the resources that are available now so I had to do a ton of digging and research to find a way to make it work!

How she balances tumbler making, family and work…

That has been something that I’ve struggled with and still struggle with. When I’m full on orders I’ll work 80-85 hours a week so there’s very little time for anything extra. I will try to set one day aside a week and not doing anything work wise, that definitely helps keep my sanity and I’d hire a house cleaner!

And how long she’s been making tumblers…

I started in 2017.

Her favorite project…

My most favorite project that I made was with my granddaughter. She wanted to make her Paw Paw a cup for Christmas last year and she did everything except the layers of epoxy. She was so proud of it!

And her least favorite project…

Anything that includes chunky glitter or me having to touch the glitter. So weird I know but I really don’t like touching glitter!

Her favorite CCDIY product…

Only one? My first love is Artist Resin followed very closely with Fast Set.

A tip she would give beginning resin artists…

Start small! Pick a small project and work your way to bigger more detailed projects. Also remember there are no failures in art!

Her must have tool for resin art…

Artist Resin and Fast Set! I can not live without either of those!

Anything else we should know about her or her craft…

I’ve always had a special love for art and painting but as we grow and build our families this is sometimes something that there is just not time for. I started this as a side hustle which a lot of us crafters do and it has developed into much more. I’ve been able to find a way to express myself creatively through my pieces of functional art. I’ve teamed up with several companies as Brand Ambassadors (Counter Culture DIY) being my first and have developed life long friendships with people I would have never crossed paths with.
