How to Coat Modeling Clay with Artist Resin

Coating modeling clay with artist resin is so easy!  In fact, you can also use Artist Resin to create a glass-like finish on many types of textured artwork.

The cool thing about artist resin when used in modeling clay is that it take your 3D effect to the next level. It helps preserve your clay artwork to make it last for years to come. At the same time, it enhances the texture, color, and creates that glossy finish that is very pleasing to the eyes and to touch.

So, let’s get started.

  1. Assemble the clay art on the wood panel. You may want to draw your pattern on the panel before you start. Then lay out your clay pieces to create your desired design.  Once your design is done, you can apply your Artist Resin!
  2. Tip: Wood panels contain trapped air which, when released can form bubbles. Bubbles can ruin your project. Pre-sealing wood CCDIY Quick Coat is a good way to prevent bubbles.
  3. Make sure you panel is level.
  4. Go to our Resin Calculator to determine the amount of Artist Resin you need for the size of panel you’re using.
  5.     Wear your gloves, and accurately measure the recommended amount of resin and hardener in a mixing container.  Stir well for about three minutes. Making sure that you scrape the bottom and the sides of your mixing container as you stir. Read our blog on How to Properly Mix Counter Culture DIY Artist Resin.
  6. Pour the Artist Resin at the center of your piece. Use a brush to spread it out to the edges without ruining your design.  Read our blog How to Pour and Spread Epoxy Resin for more tips and tricks!
  7. Use a torch for popping the bubbles.  Check out What Torch Does Counter Culture Recommend and Why?
  8. Check if there are specks of dust, or any particles which should not be there.  Remove them using a toothpick.
  9. Cover your project and let it sit for 24 hours to cure.

The following day, artwork is covered in a glass-like finish.  You can hang it on the wall but if you plan to ship it, please wait for at least 72 hours until the resin is fully cured.
