Preserving your wedding bouquet in resin can turn flowers from your wedding day into a keepsake you can display for years. But before you pour, one decision matters more than almost anything else: choosing the right epoxy resin.

Wedding flower preservation usually involves thick molds, delicate dried flowers, and pours that are much deeper than a typical coating project. That means the resin you use needs enough working time to flow around petals and greenery, release trapped air, and cure without generating excessive heat.

What Kind of Resin Is Best for Preserving Wedding Flowers?

For most dimensional wedding-flower projects, the best choice is a clear casting resin designed for thicker pours.

Casting resins are generally formulated with a longer working time and slower cure than fast-curing coating epoxies. That matters when you're working with flowers because the resin needs time to move into the spaces between petals and stems while allowing bubbles to rise.

Why Pour Depth Matters

A resin that works beautifully as a thin tabletop coating is not automatically suitable for a thick flower block.

Epoxy creates heat as it cures. When a large volume of resin is poured too deeply, that heat can build rapidly. Excessive heat can shorten working time, damage delicate flowers, cause discoloration, or lead to an unsuccessful cure.

Always match your resin to the depth and volume of the mold you're using, and follow the current pour-depth instructions for that specific product.

Working Time Is Especially Important With Flowers

Flower preservation isn't simply pouring resin into an empty mold. You'll often be positioning multiple flowers, checking the arrangement from different angles, guiding resin around petals, and watching for trapped air.

A longer working time gives you more opportunity to:

  • Arrange flowers carefully.
  • Allow resin to flow between petals.
  • Release trapped bubbles.
  • Make small adjustments before the resin begins to thicken.

Clarity and Yellowing

Wedding bouquets often contain whites, creams, pale pinks, and other light colors, so resin clarity is particularly important.

Start with a high-quality clear resin and keep the finished keepsake away from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive heat. All epoxy systems can change somewhat over time, so good materials and proper display conditions both matter.

What About Bubbles Around the Flowers?

Dried flowers contain many tiny spaces where air can hide. Roses and other layered flowers are especially good at trapping air between petals.

A lower-viscosity casting resin with sufficient working time can help air escape before the resin cures. Pouring slowly and watching the flower centers during the early part of the cure can also help.

Can You Put Fresh Flowers Directly Into Epoxy?

We don't recommend it. Flowers should be properly dried before they are embedded in epoxy.

Fresh flowers contain moisture, and that moisture can create cloudiness, discoloration, bubbles, and curing problems. Drying is one of the most important steps in the entire preservation process.

Should You Use Coating Resin or Casting Resin?

Think about the project rather than simply choosing an epoxy labeled "clear."

Coating resin is generally designed for relatively thin applications such as artwork, tabletops, tumblers, and protective surface coats.

Casting resin is designed for molds and thicker pours where longer working time and controlled heat buildup are important.

For a thick wedding bouquet block, casting resin is usually the appropriate category.
