Plaid has a unique charm that transcends trends and seasons, but it truly shines in the fall. Its origins are steeped in history, yet it never loses its modern appeal. There's something about those intersecting lines and vibrant colors that just feels like a warm hug.

Whether it’s the classic red and black buffalo check or a sophisticated tartan, plaid evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminding us of cozy nights by the fire and the crunch of leaves underfoot.

Crafting the Perfect Plaid Tumbler

Creating plaid tumblers is not only fun but also a great way to experiment with colors and designs. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Color Combinations: Think outside the box with your color palette. While traditional reds, greens, and blacks are a safe bet, why not try something new like teal and mustard or blush and navy? These unexpected combinations can give your tumbler a fresh twist.

  • Layering Techniques: To achieve that perfect plaid look, layering is key. No matter how you do a plaid, you will need three colors. For this plaid method, choose two colors that blend well and, in a third container, combine them to make a third shade. Start with your darkest color, then add your combined color, and finally add in the lightest shade. This will help you maintain crisp lines and a neat finish.

  • Personal Touches: Don’t forget to add a personal touch! Nail tape is a great way to add some detail and fancy to your plaid. And you can take it a step further with a decal. Whether it’s a monogram or a favorite quote, these small details can make your tumbler extra special.

Plaid resonates with us because it’s more than just a pattern; it’s a feeling. It represents comfort, tradition, and a connection to the past while still allowing room for personal expression. When you sip your favorite fall drink from a plaid tumbler, it’s like wrapping yourself in your coziest flannel on a brisk autumn day.

Step By Step Instructions

  • First, combine your two glitter colors into a medicine cup until you get a shad that is half way between the two. You will be using all three colors for this plaid.
  • Start by using a cutting machine and a checker template to cut your plaid design. Not sure how to do this? Lindsey has you covered. Check out her group All Things Tumblers, Cricuit, and More for the tutorial!
  • Next, carefully wrap the tack sheet around the tumbler. To do this, peel back an inch from the edge and press that onto the tumbler. Then, working an inch at a time, peel and stick until the whole tumbler is covered.
  • Now it's time to remove our first batch of squares. Choose a row to start with and remove the backing from one square. Then skip one and pick the next until you finish that row.
  • Then skip a whole row and repeat the same "pick one, skip one" process on the next row. Continue this around the whole tumbler until you have every other one on every other row exposed.

Adding the Glitter!

  • Now use the darkest color glitter and sprinkle it over your exposed squares. Gently press and rub to get the glitter to stick and cover completely. Then use a paint brush to gently brush away any excess glitter.
  • Next, peel back the rest of the squares on the rows you just did. And every other square on the rows that haven't been touched yet. If this sounds confusing, don't worry! Lindsey shows us exactly how it's done in the video tutorial above!
  • Now go in with your mixed glitter and apply that to your open squares just like we did before.
  • Then remove your final squares and apply the lightest color to those.

Seal and Epoxy

  • Before moving on to our resin layers, we need to seal in the glitter. Use Rustoleum 2X Clear spray sealant and let it dry.
  • Next, mix up a batch of Fast Set Turbo according to the package instructions. Measure equal amounts of Parts A and B. Then pour part B into part A and mix well for 3-5 minutes. Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of your cup as you go, as well as your mixing stick. This ensures that all of your epoxy will be well incorporated.

  • Apply a thin (this is important) layer of the Turbo onto the tumbler and let it cure.
  • Then add a second layer of the epoxy and let that cure. Sand the tumbler to make sure that you don't have any bumps and clean off any debris.
  • Now is where you can add your nail tape to really make your plaid pop.
  • Then add your final layer of resin, let it cure, and your buffalo plaid tumbler is ready to use!
