Proven Ways to Prevent & Remove Bubbles in Epoxy Resin

Caeden Frazier |

Epoxy resin is a versatile material used in a variety of crafting and DIY projects. However, one common issue that can arise when working with epoxy resin is the formation of bubbles. These bubbles can detract from the final result, leaving a less-than-perfect finish. In this blog post, we will explore how to prevent and remove bubbles in epoxy resin to achieve a flawless outcome.

What causes bubbles in epoxy resin?

Bubbles can form in epoxy resin for a variety of reasons, including mixing the epoxy too quickly, applying it to a porous surface, or not sealing chunky glitters. Additionally using a stirring method that introduces air into the mixture can also lead to the formation of bubbles.

How to prevent bubbles in epoxy resin

The easiest way to remove bubbles from epoxy is to prevent them from forming in the first place. Here are a few methods that can help:

  • Slowly and thoroughly mix the resin and hardener without "whipping" it.
  • Using a warm water bath, slightly heat part A before mixing with part B. This will thin the epoxy out enough to prevent most bubbles. Thicker resins tend to trap more bubbles because they don't naturally release easily.
  • Seal any porous surface or glitter that you're applying epoxy to. Quick Coat is a great option for this. Porous surfaces trap air and can cause bubbles to form even after torching the epoxy.
  • Use thinner layers to make it easier to remove them after applying.

How to remove bubbles in epoxy resin

If bubbles do form in your epoxy resin project, there are several methods you can use to remove them:

  • Use a heat gun or propane torch (recommended) to carefully pass over the surface of the resin, which will cause the bubbles to rise and pop.
  • Lightly spritz the epoxy with isopropyl alcohol to remove surface bubbles.
  • Use a toothpick or pin to carefully pop any remaining bubbles that have not dissipated on their own.

By following these tips for preventing and removing bubbles in epoxy resin, you can ensure that your projects turn out smooth and bubble-free. Remember to always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific epoxy resin product you are using to achieve the best results.
